Position: Percussion Advisor

Reports To: Building Principal

Salary Schedule / Grade: $1,500 for each season

F.L.S.A Status: Exempt 

 

 

 

SUMMARY 

Under the supervision of the Principal and an assistant to the High School Band Director, the Percussion Instructor is responsible for the planning and instruction of the school’s percussion students. Responsibilities will encompass both field and parade percussion. 

 

This seasonal employment opportunity runs from July to December and/or January to June and is dependent on performance schedule.




ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Engage students to practice, play and perform introduced materials. 
  • Attend all rehearsals, sectionals, and performances, actively participating in assisting students in sectionals and whole group rehearsals. 
  • Teach drumline basics, i.e. warm-ups, marching techniques and stick work.  
  • Teach cadences for marching/playing at athletic, school and community events. 
  • Work with the director during auditions and provide input into placement of students on particular instruments of the drumline. 
  • Teach and assist front ensemble players (where applicable) with mallet technique and the memorization of music  
  • Assist in teaching drill for the show. Choreograph sticking and drum line movement to match the drill (if applicable).  
  • Monitor and control student behavior according to established procedures 
  • Maintain inventories of percussion supplies, materials and equipment.  
  • Adjust and maintain percussion instruments ensuring timely availability for student use.  
  • Be able to work outdoors and indoors; exposure to sun, heat, cold and inclement weather.  



QUALIFICATIONS 

  • High School Diploma  
  • Strong background in marching band, percussion performance.
  • University marching band experience preferred.  
  • Experience in the various sub groups of the percussion section (e.g. snare, bass, tenors, mallets, etc)  
  • Previous experience with instructing/teaching percussion.  
  • Experience working with high school aged students.  
  • Ability to inspire students, building enthusiasm and love of the subject 
  • Ability to tune/replace drum heads and do minor repairs on drumline equipment.  
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, parents, administrators, and community members.  
  • Maintain high level of ethical behavior and exercise good judgment in making decisions.  
  • Strong organizational and communication skills  
  • Ability to interact with students of different age and skill level in a positive and professional manner.  




PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS 

  •   Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, stoop, and climb stairs 
  •   Occasionally lift and/or move lightweight items up to 40 lbs. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  •   Work will be in an indoor and outdoor setting (exposure to sun, heat, cold and inclement weather)  
  •   Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue 
  •   Work may be subject to frequent interruptions 
  •   Some assignments are subject to completion within strict timelines
