Position: Mechanic

Reports To: Shift Group Leader

Salary Schedule / Grade: Refer to DPS Mechanics Contract

FLSA Status: Nonexempt

Probationary Period: 60 Days

 

 

SUMMARY

Repair and maintain district buses, cars, vans, and other vehicles to prevent disruptions to the educational process.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Diagnose simple and complex automotive issues.
  • Repair electrical equipment, fuel injectors and pumps.
  • Rebuild engines, electrical systems, air and hydraulic brakes, and front and rear suspensions.
  • Inspect and replace drive train components.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on vehicles per preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Perform emergency service calls for stranded vehicles.
  • Perform complete safety inspections as required.
  • Carry out oral and written instructions as directed by the assigned shift group leader.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance.
  • Maintain the shop area in a clean, orderly and safe condition.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S.
  • Must have or be able to obtain an Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L.) Class A license with school bus passenger endorsement within 6 months of appointment
  • Must provide own hand tools
  • Must pass Federal and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background check in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code Section 3301-83-06
  • Must pass an Ohio Department of Education T8 physical
  • Three (3) years of experience in vehicle maintenance, experience repairing buses preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of diesel and gas engine management systems; anti-lock brake systems; emission control systems; and engine diagnostic equipment



PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS  

  • Must be able to climb, stand, lift, and bend for extended periods of time
  • Perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs
  • Able to climb, lift, balance, walk and stop while handling materials
  • Ability to lift up a minimum of 75 pounds
  • Ability to read and write to complete forms and reports

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT  

  • Work regularly involves standing for sustained periods
  • Regular exposure to materials and hazards associated with a large vehicle maintenance garage
