VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

 

The Dayton City School District McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program (Office of Federal Programs) is currently recruiting for On-Site Tutors at local Temporary Housing Shelters and on as needed basis in school buildings after-school for students.  The On-Site Tutors are responsible for enhancing reading and math literacy of children and youth experiencing homelessness.

 

Pay:  $35.15 (or DEA approved rate) per hour, Monday through Thursday, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at local Temporary Housing Shelters, or after-school for students as needed.

 

              

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist students with homework assignments, help them prepare for tests, and provide extra help in specific subjects.
  2. Continually assesses student progress and maintains appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for progress.
  3. Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.
  4. Informs the Homeless Education Liaison when home visits become necessary to improve student achievement.
  5. Participates and assists with extracurricular activities for homeless children and youth.
  6. Forecasts educational needs of each student and collaborates with teacher/advisors in diagnosing learning gaps and developing interventions.
  7. Provides supplemental and educational resources in order to support student growth.
  8. Assists the Outreach Specialist with recruitment in order to reach as many students at the shelters.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Good knowledge of content, methods, materials, and equipment for academics.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students and parents.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Ability to instruct students on computer software usage.
  • Patience and ability to work harmoniously with children and youth experiencing homelessness.
  • Knowledge of working with socially and economically disadvantaged children and youth.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Minimum of three (3) years successful teaching experience at the primary or secondary level.
  2. Must currently be a Dayton Public Schools’ teacher.
  3. Successful intervention program experience. 
  4. Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.

 

 

In order to be considered as an applicant, you must be willing to provide services at a domestic violence, substance abuse/mental health or emergency housing shelter.  The site may be located in a subsidized housing area.
