Position: Athletic Coach 

Reports To: Building Athletic Director 

Salary Schedule / Grade: Stipend According to the DEA Master Agreement 

F.L.S.A Status: Non-exempt 

 

 

SUMMARY 

Under the direction of the building athletic director/principal, head coach and assistant coach instructs and works with athletes to prepare them for competition. Coaches help athletes to play their best individually and as a team in sports such as football, baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, tennis, cross country, swimming, track and golf. Coaches are experts on the rules, strategies, and techniques of their sports.  Coach must also know about sports equipment, physical fitness, safety as well as the related eligibility and compliance guidelines for DPS and the Ohio High School Athletics Association. Coaches appropriate attire will be determined by the Executive Director of Athletics. Due to the increased duties and requirements from the district and the OHSAA standards, coaches will not be considered for athletic director positions. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Incumbent performs a majority of the following duties

 

Organization and Communication 

  • Communicate information regarding expectation, practices, competitions and other events with parents, players and administration in a timely manner 
  • Conduct orientation programs for parents, athletes and assistant coaches 
  • Develop procedures and establish open communication with parents and athletes to address any issues or concerns related to the team 

Administrative 

  • Implement and follow Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA), district, state and school athletic codes, rules and philosophies 
  • Monitor athlete class attendance, behavior and academic progress 
  • Ensure quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written correspondence with the media

Training and Preparation of Athletes 

  • Teach sports techniques, playing rules, strategies and playing tactics 
  • Practice with clear objectives and goals including practice plans
  • Condition athletes appropriately for activities requiring endurance, strength and agility
  • Supervise and conduct practices and contests safely; supervise locker rooms and vehicles
  • Teach sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethic and responsibility to one’s team 
  • Respond to player injuries with approved first aid techniques 
  • Model appropriate behavior and sportsmanship in and out of the athletic arena 
  • Provide coverage for absent coaches 
  • Provide positive motivation 

All DPS district assistant coaches are expected to abide by the coaches’ Code of Ethics as outlined in DPS board policy. As a professional educator and leader, the head coach will: 

  • Be modest in victory and gracious in defeat 
  • Respect the integrity and judgment of the game officials 
  • Provide a safe environment for practice and competition 
  • Communicate and interpret program goals and objectives to parents and community
  • Strive to develop the qualities of leadership, initiative and good judgment in each team member 
  • Create a set of training rules for athletes which reflects the positive values of abstaining from the use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco 
  • Encourage and assist team members to set personal goals to achieve their highest academic potential 
  • Recognize the individual worth and reinforce the self-image of each team member 
  • Exemplify the highest moral character a role model for young people

QUALIFICATIONS 

 

Requirements 

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S. 

Verifications 

  • Must pass Federal and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background check in accordance with Ohio Administrative Code Section 3301-83-06 
  • Ohio Teaching license preferred

Knowledge & Experience 

  • Three or more years previous coaching experience at high school or college or higher level in the sport being coached. 
  • Knowledge of overall operation of an athletic program 
  • Must pass a district background check 
  • Possess valid CPR/First-Aid, Pupil Activity Permit, Fundamental of Coaching, Concussion in Sports Course certificates and Cardiac Arrest Course Certificate. 
  • All things being equal, hiring priority is given to DEA credentialed teachers 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • Regularly works in an office environment. 
  • Work may be subject to frequent interruptions 
  • Some assignments are subject to completion within strict timelines
