CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote a safe and healthy school environment for students and staff; contribute to a positive work/learning environment; serve as an active participant within the school team
  • Assess the health status of children, providing appropriate care; identify those with health problems, referring accordingly
  • Monitor, promote and ensure immunization in compliance with Ohio State Law
  • Monitor infection control issues within the school community
  • Provide health screening; making referrals to appropriate agencies. Follow-up on students with referable health conditions
  • Act as a first responder for medical emergencies
  • Provide health education informally, as needed, and formally, as required and requested
  • Impact attendance of students by providing early intervention and follow-up
  • Provide care coordination for students with chronic health conditions
  • Provide crisis intervention for students and their families
  • Confer with students concerning health needs and provide age appropriate assistance, including health teaching and counseling
  • Assist parents in obtaining healthcare for their children by telephone, school conferences, home visits, or written communication
  • Serve as a health resource person in the school community; provide information on health issues as well as individual student medical/psychosocial problems as they relate to the student’s academic progress, health and well-being
  • Provide healthcare monitoring and consultation services to the school staff
  • Participate in Health Services staff development and department strategic goal activities
  • Document and report data to Health Services Department as directed
  • Act in accordance with professional code of ethics and School Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice; demonstrate professionalism
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Other duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S.

Verifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Ohio Board License- RN
  • Ohio Department of Education Licensure- School Nurse Certification or able to complete within two years of hire
  • CPR Certification

Knowledge & Experience

  • Minimum of three years of nursing experience; experience in school nursing preferred
  • Must be computer literate and capable of using word processing software, databases and other technology

 

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES/DEMANDS

  • The employee is frequently required to sit, reach, handle/grasp objects and occasionally required to stand, walk, lift, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; be able to walk, run, climb, or stand for extended periods of time and carry supplies/equipment and other related items.
  • The work occasionally requires eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • The employee must be able to lift and/or move items weighing up to 10 lbs.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT  

  • The work environment may expose the employee to blood borne pathogens, student population with behaviors symptomatic of mental health issues or distractible behaviors. Students may have severe visual, hearing, orthopedic, or social awareness issues.
